The .SE country-code domain extension was started in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its introduction, the registration process was very restrictive, so a very small number of domain names were registered. Persons were allowed to get solely one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a must, i.e. merely Swedish individuals, businesses and organizations were able to register a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened significantly and, as a consequence, the number of dot SE domains has been mounting each year.

At present, anybody can order a dot SE domain, which allows you to reach the Swedish net community even if you do not have a local presence.
