.MOBI Domain Name Registrations

More and more people use mobile devices to access the Internet, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is permanently increasing. To fulfill this demand, the entity that controls the generic top-level extensions, ICANN, introduced the dot MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the notion behind this TLD is that all websites that use it should comply with special restrictions. In other words, all dot MOBI websites have to be developed to be viewed without problems by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the .MOBI Registry. These incorporate how a site is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The restrictions have provoked some worries in view of the fact that the universal top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to open a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be designed in such a way as to be accessed by most Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.

As the .MOBI Registry does not sell domains directly, you can obtain a .MOBI domain with any 3rd-party company, such as ours. If you have an already active domain, you can also move it over to our company if you obtain its EPP key from your current registrar company.
